Full Job Description

We are open to receiving applications from recent graduates or those with experience in Archaeology from volunteering or similar. You will work through our award-winning training programme which lasts for a minimum of 3 months, in which you will learn field and post-excavation techniques and practices relevant to commercial archaeology. You will be buddied up with a member of the field team, who will be on hand to support you day to day, as well as being mentored by our experienced Supervisors and Project Officers. Once you have completed each element of the Training Plan to a satisfactory level and you have successfully completed your probationary period, you will be moved up to the next Grade 1.2.

Due to new business demands, with exciting projects across the UK and a busy year ahead, we are looking for enthusiastic, talented and passionate individuals with a drive to succeed, to join our team at Allen Archaeology on a fixed-term basis for 6 months, with the potential to extend the contract or offer a permanent contract based on the needs of the business at the time. This is subject to the successful completion of a three-month probationary period.

Working predominantly out of our head office in Lincoln, you will be part of a team of experienced archaeologists and trainees, on a variety of fieldwork projects across the UK, but with a particular focus in the East Midlands and East Anglia.

Whatever the reason, you will find Lincolnshire and Allen Archaeology to be a welcoming and diverse place to live and work., You will have at least 3 months experience working in commercial archaeology and a good all-round knowledge of British Archaeology. You will be working on a variety of evaluations and excavations across the UK, supporting the Project Supervisors and Project Officers. Whilst this role is primarily fieldwork based, there are aspects of Post Excavation work you will be tasked with intermittently, including finds and environmental processing. Although training and mentoring will be provided for company procedures and practices, being a good team player as well as using your own initiative is essential for success in this role.,

  • Good knowledge of British archaeology

  • A good working knowledge of archaeological field practices, including planning by hand using traditional methods

  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to work in a team, learn and take instruction

  • Fit and capable of undertaking physical work

  • A courteous and professional manner


  • Desirable:
  • Membership of CIfA at PCIfA level

  • Previous experience of on site survey kit, including GPS and Total Station

    Average overtime payments in excess of £3000 pa
