Full Job Description

We seek a dynamic and passionate communications and media specialist to join our fundraising and marketing team. As a social media and Communications Officer you will be based in Leicester but be able to travel to sites across our region. You will play a pivotal role and be responsible for crafting and sharing the compelling stories of Woodside and showcasing the transformational journeys of the many animals that we support in to their forever homes. The position involves leading efforts to increase awareness of Woodside, our services, and our fundraising activities through various media channels, including press, radio, social media and national publications., The Social Media and Communications Officer will provide expertise in all aspects of PR and social media to deliver outstanding aspects for Woodside, RSPCA Leicestershire, Peterborough and Rutland.

Striving not only to maintain but to also drive and go beyond compliance expectations, both internally and externally, to ensure that not only are our values upheld but that we are compliant in everything that we do.

Whilst ensuring that our animals are the focus of our service, the post holder will continually review, maintain and improve where necessary to uphold the charity's high standards and ensure that all levels of the charity are maintaining and working within current regulations and guidelines set out for the charity.

Role Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the development and delivery of a comprehensive annual communications plan, including: website, social media platforms and newsletters.

  • Research, write and distribute media outreach activities such as press releases, media comments, media briefs, features, blogs and letters to editors.

  • Be the first point of contact for media enquiries and manage the press office function in a timely manner.

  • Contribute to the overall Marketing and Communications function of RSPCA Woodside

  • Support the Head of Fundraising & Marketing to develop larger cross-organisational campaigns that help deliver Woodside's strategic plan with creative thinking and solutions.

  • Newsletter Production: Design, write, and distribute engaging and informative newsletters (printed and digital) to stakeholders and the wider community, highlighting key work, information and activity.

  • Brand protection: Ensure the brand guidelines are adhered to across the organisation.

  • Managing, updating and growing website and multiple social media platforms across the organisation.

  • Guiding and supporting the functions in the management of their own social media platforms.

  • Ensuring all charity property, materials and resources are managed though our asset register system.

  • Maximising digital fundraising platforms to create an ongoing revenue stream.

  • Responding to social media and press related enquiries in a timely and professional manner, escalating where appropriate.

  • Identifying and managing digital fundraising opportunities to generate income and awareness of Woodside.

  • Provide day to day moderation of our social media and forum, building a sense of community online.

  • Keep up to date with emerging trends and new technologies to maximise opportunities and help shape ongoing channel and content development.

  • Proactively engage with our target audiences by sharing content, finding ways to grow followership and improve overall engagement.

  • Work with all departments and teams to develop content and ensure social media content supports organisational content strategy, SEO and digital in general.

  • Develop content in response to external moments, trending topics or national days to ensure we are on trend and on topic.

  • Provide practical technical expertise and constructive advice to colleagues across the organisation on social media matters.

  • Occasional events attendance

  • Core Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the organisation has robust GDPR (data protection), safeguarding guidelines and legal/Woodside/RSPCA Society regulations/policies and assurance framework in place.

    · Experience of managing social media platforms


  • · Experience of writing press releases and liaising with media professionals both internal & external

    · Ability to engage, nurture and enthuse.

    · In an environment where no day is the same, you will be calm and able to respond in a crisis.

    · Confident communication skills, with the ability to distil complex topics into engaging stories for different audiences and channels.

    · Good editing and proofreading skills

    · Fast learner - able to discover and use new tools and platforms quickly.

    · Demonstrable commitment to collaborative teamwork

    · Experience of managing budgets and charity assets

    · Excellent organisational and workload management skills, with ability to work under own initiative to manage deadlines.

    · Excellent all round IT skills, as well as familiarity with content management systems, image editing software, social media monitoring and platform insights tools. Google Analytics is a plus.
