Full Job Description

This exciting locum opportunity has arisen due to the need for parental leave cover and for additional capacity for our current activities. It is offered on a full-time (10 PA) basis, although this can be negotiated if requested.

The department of Anaesthesia, Pain and Intensive Care at Mid Yorkshire consists of sixty-one consultant anaesthetists and sixty trainees, specialty doctors, MTIs and Trust registrars. We provide Anaesthetic & Pain services over 3 sites (Pinderfields, Dewsbury and Pontefract) with the acute surgery, obstetric and intensive care services based at Pinderfields (Wakefield). We are a large Trust with all the major surgical specialties and a Regional Burns Centre which provides the opportunity for sub-specialty interests and a passionate support for regional anaesthesia. We have a new Day-case Surgical Hub opening soon on the Dewsbury site, where we plan to deliver additional Pain services too.

Applicants should possess, or be within 6 months of receiving a CCT at the time of the advisory appointments committee.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the posts will include:

Elective Theatre lists: for a variety of different surgical specialties including general surgery, bariatrics, urology, gynaecology, orthopedics, plastic & burns surgery, ENT and maxillofacial.

Anaesthetic services elsewhere in the hospital (e.g. for Adult and Paediatric Emergencies requiring anaesthetic support)

Urgent and emergency care duties, with schedules taking due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working.

Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10 PA timetable.

This post does not mandate an on-call commitment, but this could be negotiated at the time of appointment.

Dedicated office space is provided on the Pinderfields site, with access to IT/online facilities available within the anesthetic department at Dewsbury hosptial.

  • Medical Degree from recognised medical school

  • FRCA or equivalent


  • Desirable
  • Higher qualifications e.g. MD, PhD, MSc, MRCP

  • Audit or Case Presentations

  • Teaching qualification/ prize


  • Experience
    Essential
  • Sufficient experience at a senior level to be placed on the specialist register.

  • Computer literate.

  • Fully accredited by the college and acceptable to college representative.

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in anaesthetics.

  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.

  • Ability to work flexibly within a team

  • Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or project work.

  • Evidence of ongoing CPD, Please state full GMC number

  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practise.

  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthetics or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (or CESR / equivalent) by date of interview
